2. Why Material Grade Decides Service Life

A riding ring lives on strength, toughness, and resistance to contact fatigue, so the grade is chosen by kiln diameter, load, and speed:

  • ZG310-570 / ZG35 medium-carbon cast steel — the general-strength workhorse for standard kilns, with enough toughness for the rolling contact load.

  • ZG35CrMo / ZG42CrMo low-alloy cast steel — added Cr and Mo raise strength and resistance to contact fatigue, used on larger or heavier-loaded kilns where plain carbon steel would shorten the campaign.

3. What We Verify Before Shipment

Riding rings are bought on section soundness and fit, not on a nameplate. For these orders, Tiegu confirms the following with the foundry and on the documents:

  • Internal soundness: review UT and MT across the section for shrinkage, porosity, and cracks — a hidden defect in a thick ring is the usual cause of a fatigue failure, so this check matters more than on a small part.

  • Dimensions and roundness: gauge outside diameter, width, bore fit, and surface finish against your drawing, and check roundness so the ring seats true on the shell and tracks the rollers.

  • Hardness in band: confirm surface hardness falls within the band called for on your drawing — too soft and it wears fast, too hard and it risks brittle contact.

  • Heat treatment: confirm normalizing (or quenching and tempering for the alloy grades) plus stress relief so residual stress does not open cracks in service.

4. Specification Checklist for Buyers

  • Kiln type, diameter, and the tyre station (which of the support positions).

  • Grade (ZG310-570, ZG35CrMo, ZG42CrMo, etc.) and required mechanical properties (UTS, impact if specified).

  • Drawing with bore, outside diameter, width, fit tolerance (ISO 8062), and machining surface.

  • Required NDT level (UT / MT) and the hardness band.

  • Machining scope (rough cast or finish-machined) and lead time — rings are long-cycle castings, so confirm before a planned kiln overhaul.

1. Cast steel or forged for a riding ring?

Riding rings at kiln scale are almost always cast steel. Forging a ring this large and thick is not practical, and cast steel meets the strength and toughness needed when the grade, heat treatment, and NDT are controlled. We supply to drawing and confirm the grade and inspection with you.

2. How is a riding ring fitted to the kiln shell?
